Description
DESCRIPTION:This beaded "skull cracker" has a wood shaft covered in rawhide (parfleche) which is sinew sewn. It is then decorated with beads and a horsehair drop or tassel on the end of the handle. The "business" end is a stone wrapped in the same parfleche and decorated with beads. The handle was also dyed with yellow ocher, much of which still remains. Ones like this were likely made for ceremonial or sales purposes as they are not really functional as a weapon.
MAKER:
Unknown, but attributed as being Plains.
APPROX AGE:
Antique, circa late 1800s to early 1900s.
