IRON POLL TOMAHAWK EARLY 1700's LIKELY F&I WAR WEAPON: "PRE-EYE" WAS THONG HAFTED!This beautifully smithed hawk is exciting as a transitional example taking the weapon from stone,
once inserted or thonged into a split wooden haft, to the iron we have here,
easily forged without the extra metal and labor required to form an eye. Still, the poll is
camfered and tapered suggesting French expertise leading to a possible use in the French and Indian War. Note it is slightly
rounded, and not used as a hammer--suggesting it was part of the weapon--preceding the spike formation which came later.
The flared bit would also be compatible with that attribution. In my opinion, it is a serious link in tomahawk history.
Measurement: 5 3/4 inches long. The bit is 4 inches.
Condition: Unretouched. Deeply patinated. Light surface erosion (see pics).
