Description
What you have here is a very early trade halbred tomahawk , theses were trade items mostly for Ceremonial use . Copied from the pole arm they were down sized to be hand held weapons and were used in combat in the earliest days of the fur trade and as stated above they were used as symbols of power .This axe is made in typical fashion of one piece construction with a beveled spear point at the top the spear point being forged with a center ridge line that can be seen in the pics , and a dull (oval in cross section) spiked end and a Crescent shaped axe blade.
By the size and weight I would say this axe may have had a short thick handled or was used for throwing .Most throwing halbreds that I have seen had there handled ground to a point or forged that way , this example has a blunt end with a hole , Possibly for a thong or possibly for halfting . Just an all around great great axe from the earliest time of the fur trade . The patina is even and rich all over the axe with patina in the inner walls of the hole as well , some pitting and dings and scraps as to be expected but completely Soild and functional .
