Animal lovers file complaint for poisoning stray animals in Mohammadpur

A complaint has been filed with Adabor Police Station after carcasses of three stray dogs and a cat were found in Mohammadpur’s Japan Garden City last night.
The People for Animal Welfare Foundation, Bangladesh, lodged the complaint, alleging that six more dogs were poisoned but the carcasses were hidden away before they arrived at the scene.
The foundation accused Shahanur, secretary of the Japan Garden City Committee, along with other committee members, of culling the animals, alleging that it was a violation of the Animal Welfare Act 2019.
According to the foundation, some residents witnessed stray dogs and cats running in distress around 9:00pm after being poisoned, and later died.
Residents and animal rights activists alerted local police, and a sub-inspector from Adabor Police Station arrived to recover four carcasses.
The foundation claimed that stray animals in the area have faced repeated torture, despite efforts by local volunteers to vaccinate and neuter the animals.
Animal rights activist Aiman Taher alleged that the animals were poisoned using rice and biscuits.
He added there are approximately 50 stray dogs and 90 cats in the neighbourhood and confirmed plans to send the recovered carcasses for autopsy at a veterinary hospital.
Mahfuz Imtiaz, officer-in-charge of Adabor Police Station confirmed the recovery of the carcasses and said the incident is under investigation.
“We are examining the complaint. Animal lovers are also advised to seek legal recourse in court,” he added.
The People for Animal Welfare Foundation urged authorities to thoroughly investigate the incident and take legal action to prevent such cruelty in future.
